Three Self-Care Routines That Will Seriously Upgrade Your Life

Chances are you’ve heard or said the phrase “self-care” at least once over the past few weeks. While it might be a trendy buzzword at the moment, the reality is, the payoff for actually practicing it, makes it SO worth all the eye-rolls you might be getting (or giving) when it comes up in conversation. The challenge comes with actually making the time. That is truly 90% of the battle. Trust us, we get it. Life is busy, there’s not enough time in the day, between work, your relationships, and taking care of others, it can be difficult to put yourself first. But, before you think, I have zero time for myself, repeat this: Self-care is not selfish. The truth is, when you put your best foot forward, and truly prioritize yourself, everybody wins.

So where to begin? We know it can be overwhelming to try and figure out what self-care looks like. Well, lucky for you, it looks different for everyone. BUT here at Canary + Co we have broken down three self-care routines that have worked for us, so hopefully they work for you too. Or at the very least, get your mind going on what might self-care looks like for you.

1) Daily Journaling / Practicing Gratitude: Okay, before you immediately pass over this one, we strongly recommend at the very least, giving it a try. Trust us, we were skeptical at first, but the effect that journaling and practicing gratitude can have is seriously impactful. Every night before you go to bed, try journaling just for a few minutes to try and recall anything that you came across in your day that you were thankful for. Maybe it’s something nice a coworker said to you, maybe it was a new restaurant you stumbled upon at lunch, or maybe it was just your dog eagerly greeting you when you walked in the door from work. Whatever it is, noting these moments will help you recognize things going right in your life instead of focusing on the negative.

2) Breathing and Meditation: Let’s just call this “Mindful Moments” if the idea of meditation and breathing exercises is too ‘hippie’ for you. Whatever you’d like to call it, there is no denying the power meditation and breathing exercises can have on your mood and overall health. Not sure where to begin? Try out this simple exercise from Emily Fletcher, author of Stress Less, Accomplish More: Meditation for Extraordinary Performance, to reset and refocus: Sit with your back supported and your head free. Close your eyes and move through each of your senses, noticing what you hear, feel, see, taste and smell. Tapping into your senses is a great way to ground yourself in your body and the present moment.

3) Make time for YOU: This might seem like a no brainer here, but the emphasis is truly on the YOU for this one. A recent study found that the way some people schedule time for leisure can take the fun out of it. Doing things like setting rigid time limits on activities and worrying too much about what you’re going to do afterward can put a damper on your time to unwind. Make sure that you are choosing to do something that you actually want to do. The possibilities are endless: Exercise class, take a relaxing bath, painting, listening to a podcast, you choose!

So what are you waiting for!? Happy Self-Care-ing!
